Inspired by the musical concept of “fugue”, the film was completely improvised. Actors were given notes on their respective characters and situations, and then directed throughout the shoot by short directorial annotations on pieces of paper that were slipped into view as they performed. Actors improvised their situations and stayed in character throughout the course of an entire day.
As decisions were made by the actors throughout the full day of performance, a series of events and patterns spontaneously unfolded. A non-prefabricated return to the theme of loneliness occurred and developed organically during the shoot.
